José Almeida Fernandes joined the firm in 2001. He is a member of the tax team.
Mr. Almeida Fernandes’ practice emphasizes tax planning and tax advising in specialized areas – international tax matters, transfer pricing, securitization, investment funds and derivatives & financial instruments – for multinational financial institutions and corporations, as well as for some of the major Portuguese financial institutions and corporations.
In tax litigation he has represented international and Portuguese corporations in cases involving the taxation of intangibles, thin capitalization and tax benefits.
In 2007 Mr. Almeida Fernandes was on secondment in Amsterdam with the law firm Loyens & Loeff. In 2011 he was Deputy to Secretary of State for Tax Affairs of the XIX Portuguese Constitutional Government.
Mr. Almeida Fernandes served as a teaching assistant while obtaining an advanced LL.M. in International Tax Law from Leiden University in 2007. He is a fellow of the Group for Research on European and International Taxation (“GREIT”).
