Gonçalo Machado Borges


Gonçalo Machado Borges joined the firm in 2006 and became a non-equity partner in 2019. He is a member of the firm’s European law and competition team and, since 2017, coordinates the firm’s telecoms and media practice group.

He practices in several areas of competition law, notably matters related to anticompetitive agreements and abuse of dominance (including at the appellate / trial stage) as well as merger control procedures in a wide range of sectors, in particular electronic communications in which he has assisted clients in every consolidation transaction in Portugal since 2006. He has been increasingly involved in private enforcement actions, as counsel to parties in the main cases decided to date in Portugal.

In telecoms and media he has been regularly involved for a number of years in regulatory, competition and litigation matters, including consultations preceding ANACOM resolutions; judicial challenges against individual decisions and regulations; designing remedies in merger control cases; and negotiating contracts between several operators.

Currently (2017-2019) he is a member of the Board for the Portuguese Competition Lawyers’ Association.
