Mariana Soares David teaches module on mediation and arbitration in Mozambique

Mariana Soares David, partner at Morais Leitão, is teaching the theoretical component of Module 4 – Mediation and Arbitration of the first practical training programme in legal arbitration, organised by ALAM – Lusophone Association of Arbitration and Mediation and the OAM – Mozambican Bar Association, on 18 and 21 July 2025.

The module takes place on 18, 21 and 22 July 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and aims to apply the principles of mediation and conciliation as complementary methods of dispute resolution in the Mozambican context, exploring their differences and compatibility with arbitration.

  • The training covers topics such as:
  • Differences between mediation and conciliation;
  • The role of the lawyer, mediator and conciliator;
  • The enforceability of the minutes;
  • Strategies to propose consensual solutions.

The practical component, which takes place on 22 July, will be conducted by Paula Duarte Rocha from MDR Advogados and João Ilhão Moreira (Macau), and includes a mediation session simulation between parties, followed by a group reflection and drafting of the respective minutes.

With a total duration of 6 hours (2 hours of theory and 4 hours of practice), this module is part of a training initiative involving 58 Mozambican lawyers and trainee lawyers, promoting the dissemination of best practices in mediation and arbitration across Lusophone countries.

The programme is part of the cooperation protocol signed between ALAM and OAM, reinforcing both organisations' commitment to the development of effective, sustainable, and locally adapted legal solutions.
