Tiago da Costa Andrade lectures on pre-trial detention and rights in pre-trial stages
Tiago da Costa Andrade, Principal Associate in the criminal, regulatory offences and compliance team, spoke at three sessions on “The deprivation of liberty of suspects and defendants in pre-trial stages”, held online on 23, 26 and 30 March.
As part of this initiative, he was responsible for delivering the session on the right to an effective remedy in cases of unlawful application and violations of rights during the execution of pre-trial detention.
This training is part of Project Dignity, an initiative co-funded by the European Union and developed following the European Commission Recommendation of 8 December 2022 on the procedural rights of accused persons and suspects subject to pre-trial detention and other detention measures in pre-trial stages, as well as on the material conditions of detention.
The project involved several international partners, including the European Prison Litigation Network, with the training in Portugal organised by Forum Penal. The sessions were delivered by a panel of speakers with diverse and complementary expertise, who had previously taken part in an international training programme in Athens focused on the case law and guidelines of European institutions in this area.
