On 25 November, Morais Leitão will host the conference “Reading the Signs of the Times: From the World to the Law” at the João Morais Leitão Auditorium in Lisbon. The event is an initiative of Morais Leitão/Instituto Miguel Galvão Teles and Catarina Monteiro Pires, organised to mark the 60th anniversary of the Portuguese Civil Code.
The conference offers an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of Portuguese civil law, bringing together the experience of recent decades with the challenges currently facing the law. The discussion also looks at which legal institutions may need to be reconsidered and what paths may shape the future of the Civil Code.
The programme opens with welcoming remarks by Martim Krupenski and an address by Rui Patrício on “Law and Time”. This is followed by a keynote speech by Paulo Portas on the changes that have taken place in Portugal and around the world over the past ten years.
Throughout the day, the discussion is structured around four main themes: the changes that have taken place in contract law over the past decade; the ways in which civil law has been reformed in other jurisdictions, from a comparative perspective; the legal institutions that may need to be reconsidered, from contracts to civil liability and evidence; and, finally, whether the Portuguese Civil Code should be revised or reformed.
Representing Morais Leitão are Nuno Galvão Teles, Martim Krupenski, Rui Patrício, Filipe Vaz Pinto, Vítor Pereira das Neves and Joana Galvão Teles, who will take part at different stages of the programme, from the opening session and panel moderation to the closing remarks.
The programme also brings together Rita Lynce de Faria, Henrique Sousa Antunes, Irene Seiça Girão, Rui Pinto Duarte, Dário Moura Vicente, Catarina Monteiro Pires, Rafaël Jafferali, Renato Beneduzi, Ana Filipa Morais Antunes, Ana Perestrelo de Oliveira, Agostinho Cardoso Guedes, Paulo Mota Pinto, Paula Costa e Silva, Maria de Lurdes Pereira and Eugénia Galvão Teles.
The closing session will be led by Nuno Galvão Teles, followed by a cocktail reception.
Sixty years after the adoption of the Civil Code, the conference looks back at the path travelled and, above all, at the challenges that lie ahead for the future of Portuguese civil law.
