Dzhamil Oda in interview with Advocatus: “Morais Leitão is seriously committed to athlete representation”

Dzhamil Oda, coordinating associate at Morais Leitão and a member of both the European Law and Competition and the Sports and Entertainment teams, was interviewed by Advocatus in its May edition, as part of an article focused on the topic “Sports Law: the business off the pitch.” The lawyer outlines the firm’s work in this area, highlighting how Morais Leitão has followed the growth and evolving needs of its clients in the sports sector.

“The growth of our clients and their needs in this segment has been accompanied by Morais Leitão’s necessary adaptation, which also enabled us to expand our exposure to an increasing number of stakeholders in the sports world,” says Dzhamil Oda.

Morais Leitão currently advises agents, federations, clubs, investors and athletes. “In general, we are approached by all types of clients, although a considerable volume of our work comes from agents, federations and clubs. Nevertheless, Morais Leitão is seriously committed to athlete representation, offering 360º support in all aspects related to their sporting careers as well as other non-sport-related matters.”

The team includes lawyers from a wide range of practice areas, which allows for integrated legal support in matters such as “negotiation and drafting of sports contracts, athlete representation, acquisition and disposal of sports assets, financing of clubs and sports companies, financial advisory in project finance, construction and licensing of sports facilities, sports image rights and intellectual property protection.”

In regulatory matters, Dzhamil Oda highlights the legal support provided in connection with Portugal’s bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, as well as assistance in public procurement and competition law.

The lawyer also notes that the diversity of legal and cultural frameworks represents a challenge to the consistent application of international standards. The balance between self-regulation and public regulatory intervention in sport is another relevant — and often contentious — issue he points out.
