Opinion of Nuno Galvão Teles and Rui Patrício on the reform of the justice system, to Advocatus

Nuno Galvão Teles, managing partner at Morais Leitão, and partner Rui Patrício spoke to Advocatus about the urgent need for a thorough reform of the justice system in Portugal.

The leader of Morais Leitão says that "while it is relatively consensual to refer to the eternal problem of the management of our courts, we must also recognise, in the same consensual way, that not everything works at the same pace and we should not respond with simplistic generalisations" on the other hand, there are "courts working very well, where the time taken to conclude cases or decisions is reasonable - and sometimes even below the European average..."

Partner Rui Patrício expresses concern about the superficial approach centred on issues such as corruption and mega-processes in the discussion about justice in Portugal. The partner highlights the importance of analysing, discussing and tackling the real problems of the justice system, while also criticising the lack of seriousness and negative perception generated by an excessive focus on certain issues.
