Filipe Lowndes Marques and Vera Esteves Cardoso are the authors of the Portugal chapter in the 2026 edition of Blockchain & Cryptocurrency Regulation, an international Global Legal Insights publication analysing the main legal regimes applicable to blockchain and crypto-assets.

The chapter examines the evolution of the Portuguese regulatory framework, with particular emphasis on the application of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), in force since December 2024, the transitional regime applicable to crypto-asset service providers and the role of the supervisory authorities. It also addresses anti-money laundering requirements, securities law considerations and tax matters, providing a clear and up-to-date overview of the national legal landscape in this rapidly evolving sector.
