Carlos Botelho Moniz in an interview with Jornal Económico

Carlos Botelho Moniz, in an interview with Jornal Económico, talks about the current political challenges facing the European Union, namely the provision of more financial and political aid to Ukraine, the rise of populist forces and the importance of integrating immigrants into Portugal's fiscal, social and economic systems.

Regarding the EU's aid to Ukraine, the lawyer believes that "There has been a great awareness on the part of EU policymakers that Ukraine urgently needs help, but also that Europe must be prepared to think that it will have to do more."

In the current context, Ukraine's accession to the EU "does not seem realistic and it will not be possible to integrate the country in a war situation. The start of the accession process is an incentive for the Ukrainian side to make progress with political, institutional and judicial reforms, whose independence must be ensured in order to guarantee effective control mechanisms to combat corruption. All this will take time."
