Morais Leitão took part in the launch event of the Portugal Fintech Report 2026, promoted by Portugal Fintech. The report is supported by Morais Leitão, NTT DATA and Visa.
Morais Leitão was represented at the event by Priscila Macedo Pinto, Vera Esteves Cardoso, Inês Meneses Lampreia, Manuel Verdelho, Mafalda Santos Cordeiro, João Diogo Barbosa and Carmo Moreira da Silva.
During the event, Priscila Macedo Pinto, co-head of Team Genesis, moderated the panel “Follow the Money: Ten Years of Fintech Investing and Where It Goes Next”, which looked at how fintech, insurtech and tech investing has evolved over the past decade, what has changed along the way, and where investors are looking next.
The Portugal Fintech Report 2026 also includes the chapter “MiCA Takes Shape: Licensing, Convergence and What Comes Next”, authored by Vera Esteves Cardoso, Carolina Nagy Correia, João Diogo Barbosa, Maria João Lucas and Mafalda Santos Cordeiro.
In this chapter, the team analyses the first results of the application of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) in Portugal, placing them in the context of different European experiences. The analysis also compares the Portuguese experience with that of other Member States and highlights the importance of combining rigorous supervision with regulatory predictability and efficient processes.
The report notes that Portugal has one crypto-asset service provider authorised under MiCA, compared with ten providers registered under the previous regime in 2025, as well as 180 providers authorised in other Member States and passported to provide services in Portugal. It stresses that these figures should be considered in the context of the later implementation of the national framework and do not, in themselves, constitute a measure of the country’s competitiveness.
The report also addresses the tokenisation of real-world assets, from real estate to works of art, identified as the next frontier for the sector, while noting that a legal obstacle still needs to be addressed before this market can scale.
